Aug. 31, 2018 OSE 30th Anniversary of Launch of Equity Index Futures

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the equity index futures market in Japan.

On September 3, 1988, Osaka Securities Exchange and Tokyo Stock Exchange launched Nikkei 225 Futures and TOPIX Futures, respectively.

In the early days, the main participants in those markets were domestic institutional investors and securities companies on their propriety accounts. However, along with the launch of Nikkei 225 mini in 2016 and the introduction of Night Session (then Evening Session) in 2007, the products on these markets have grown into one of the world's most prominent derivatives and are now traded by a wide range of market participants, including retail and overseas investors.

Through its effort to further expand the derivatives market, OSE will continue contributing to the development of the Japanese financial market.

Comment from Mr. Hiromi Yamaji, President and CEO of Osaka Exchange, Inc.:

It is a great pleasure for us to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the launch of equity index futures. I truly appreciate the support and cooperation that all parties concerned, including investors, have extended to us to date. Equity index futures have been traded by so many investors since the launch of Nikkei 225 Futures and TOPIX Futures. They have provided risk hedge and price discovery functions that are immensely essential in today's world. As we remain committed to being your exchange of choice, we will make efforts to operate stable markets and provide the best services suited to the times and investor needs.
